JOURNALIST BEN SALES HERE FOR SELICHOT, SEPTEMBER 21 Tross Family Education Center at North Shore Congregation Israel 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe 8:00 – 9:30 PM
The high holidays begin with Selichot. Ben Sales, the US correspondent for the Jewish Telegraphic Agency will speak to us about the Jews in the news and how the news affects the Jews. Look here at some of the more than 700 articles he has written for the Times of Israel.
We reflect on the year that has been and what our possibilities are for the year ahead. It involves personal, family, community and world-wide considerations.
This has been a year of extraordinary consequence for Jews in public life with Cohen, Minuchin, Epstein, Miller, Dershowitz, Kasky, Schiff and Nadler in the headlines. By September 21, the Israeli elections will have determined the future of Israel and Bibi. It has also been a year of increasing divide between Israeli and American Jews at the very time American Jews are the most respected group by other Americans — even Muslim Americans.
Ben Sales has covered Israeli, Palestinian, the greater Middle East and American issues. He has dealt with Israeli politicians, investigated The Leslie Wexner and Jeff Epstein connection, and covered Tamar Manasseh’s efforts with MASK.
Ben comes from the North Shore where his family are active leaders of the community. He studied at Washington University in St. Louis while he was also editor-in-chief of New Voices, a national Jewish student magazine.
Selichot introduces us to the themes of the High Holidays. This presentation will stimulate our introspection from a collective perspective. The introduction to the themes of the mahzor will make it personal.
With ideas, music, a little dessert and the sound of the shofar, we will prepare for the extraordinary holidays ahead.
